Trade, Tariffs, and Security in North America
Hosted by the Inter-American Dialogue
Recent shifts in the global economic order are reshaping regional integration and trade flows across North America. This discussion explored how regional trade has adapted, evolved, and innovated in recent months amid the persistent threat of tariffs, as well as growing speculation that the USMCA could shift toward an annual review process or give way to more bilateral arrangements. Participants also assessed how this uncertainty is shaping investment decisions and cross-border business operations, and how U.S. national security concerns continue to influence commercial policymaking in Mexico and Canada—particularly in strategic sectors and in response to China’s expanding presence in the region.
