Over the past decade, Mexico’s experience has demonstrated that refugees can successfully integrate into local communities and contribute to the economies and societies that welcome them. 50by35 is UNHCR’s global vision to ensure that, by 2035, half of the world’s aid‑reliant refugees move beyond aid through greater self-reliance and pathways to solutions, including access to decent work and sustainable livelihoods. It recognizes economic inclusion as a key part of protection and a pathway to self-reliance, enabling refugees to contribute to the communities and economies where they live.

As UNHCR advances its 50by35 vision, Mexico is now exploring how to build on this experience and make refugee inclusion more sustainable and firmly embedded in national systems, labor markets and private-sector partnerships. This is particularly relevant in a North American context, where economies and labor markets are deeply interconnected, even as approaches to forced displacement and refugee protection differ across countries. The discussion offers an opportunity to examine what makes inclusion work, how successful approaches can be sustained and scaled, and the role that governments, businesses and other actors can play.
